The change towards organic food consumption can not only help to improve our health and that of our families and friends, it also brings great benefits to farm animals, wildlife, the countryside and the environment as a whole.

There are lots of places to buy and grow local organic food in the area; supermarkets are not always the best or cheapest choice. The box schemes make some of the best value buys with locally produced organic food delivered to your door frequently at a much cheaper price than the supermarket.

Recent surveys have shown that about half of all UK fruit and vegetables contain pesticide residues. These risky chemicals can bio-accumulate in our bodies or harm our hormone systems. Which ever supermarket you use please do challenge your supermarket and ask them to do more about reducing pesticides and GM labeling, as they all have work to improve.

This directory lists shops and markets where you have a better chance of buying organic, fair traded, locally produced food but do look at labels carefully, ask shopkeepers questions and with fruit and veg don't be afraid to smell and feel before you buy.
